Will You Stand in the Gap?

“And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.” – Ezekiel 22:30 King James Version

What Makes “The Gap” Different?

I think the old hymn ” Old Camp-Meeting Days” by Adgar M. Pace says it best when it comes to qualities of Emory Gap Missionary Baptist Church

Preaching

You can rest assured that you will hear the Word of God preached, from nothing except the King James Bible. Pastor Robert doesn’t follow a program, but preaches what God gives him, including the humor.

Praying

We are not just a church body, we are a family, we pray for one another, in sickness, health, loss, and gains. There are many miraculous prayers that have been answered over the years.

Singing

If you are one to make a “joyful noise unto the LORD” you will fit right in with us. We have many talented singers and musicians in our midst. Singing and playing songs they feel led by the Spirit to sing.

Shouting

With the other three, the Holy Spirit is sure to show up, which leads to the last quality, shouting. Our congregation isn’t the quietest bunch. We say amen, we praise his name, and even shout praises when felt led to do so.

I like the old time preaching, praying singing, shouting
I like the old time reading of God’s word
I like to hear those old time Hallelujah stories
I like the old time worship of the Lord

What Does It Mean to Stand in the Gap?

They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

Nehemiah 4:17 kjv

In Nehemiah 4, we are told of the rebuilding of the wall around Jerusalem. Nehemiah said that those that built the wall, worked with one hand, and cleaved to their swords in the other. Because all while they worked, there enemies were coming trying to slay them.

That is just like how it is today, while we as servants do the work of our Saviour, our enemy, the devil, is trying to slay us. He does not want the work to succeed. Little does he know the war has already been one.

And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I

should not destroy it: but I found none.

EZEKIEL 22:30 KJV

Unlike Nehemiah, the Prophet Ezekiel, speaking the words the LORD had given him. In a time of judgement, God found no one to stand in the gap, and defend the land or even make intercession for it to not be destroyed.

On the largest scale, that is what Jesus Christ has done for us, He paid the ultimate price by volunteering to die on the cross for us. And now stands in the gap to make intercession for us.

What does that mean for us, here? It means we as Christian should stand in the gap for others. On the smallest of scale, for your family, your children, your spouse.

I personally have seen what the power of prayer can do in a unyoked family. My mother raised me in church at Emory Gap, and we stood in the gap for my father for most of my childhood. We prayed without ceasing that he would get saved and do God’s will, and what a change him you will have to come witness for yourself. My father is now a deacon at the church, and stands in the gap for as he says “the lost and unconcerned in our family”
